Today's Scripture
Bearing Fruit – Mark 11:12-18
TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Isaiah 43-44; Mark 11:1-18(CEB)
12 The next day, after leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 From far away, he noticed a fig tree in leaf, so he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing except leaves, since it wasn’t the season for figs.14 So he said to it, “No one will ever again eat your fruit!” His disciples heard this.
15 They came into Jerusalem. After entering the temple, he threw out those who were selling and buying there. He pushed over the tables used for currency exchange and the chairs of those who sold doves. 16 He didn’t allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. 17 He taught them, “Hasn’t it been written, My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations? But you’ve turned it into a hideout for crooks.” 18 The chief priests and legal experts heard this and tried to find a way to destroy him. They regarded him as dangerous because the whole crowd was enthralled at his teaching.
What does this passage mean to me/us
Some might say that these two events have no connection.
However, there might be a reason why they were shared side by side.
The reason why God called us to be God’s children is to follow God’s ways in this world.
When we are following God’s will, we will bear fruit in this world.
God also calls our lives to be a temple, a holy dwelling place of God, in this world, but we can also see how we have ‘selling and buying places’ which Jesus wants to throw out. When there are distractions, it becomes harder for the temple to continue its mission; My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.
When we are focused on our call, we will bear fruits. When we lose sight of our call, we will not bear fruit.
Prayer
Lord, help us focus our hearts to your call. Throw away, for us, all distractions that make us lose focus of your call. In Christ name, we pray, AMEN.
