Today's Scripture

I can hear my savior Calling – Mark 1: 16-20

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Isaiah 1-2; Mark 1:1-22 (CEB)

16 As Jesus passed alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” 18 Right away, they left their nets and followed him. 19 After going a little farther, he saw James and John, Zebedee’s sons, in their boat repairing the fishing nets. 20 At that very moment he called them. They followed him, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers.

What does this passage mean to me/us

After Jesus comes back from the forty days fast, he starts proclaiming the Kingdom of God.
Sharing the Good News of the Kingdom entails teaching, but also calling disciples to follow.

As a follower, I am always amazed at the instantaneous respond of the first disciples.
“Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” 18 Right away, they left their nets and followed him” (Mark 1: 17-18).

I know it took a while for this call to develop, but for these disciples, they followed at once.
At the same time, I also see how I might not have clearly heard the call, or to a point ignored it.

My wife has a hymn she loves, called “I can hear my savior calling.”

It talks about how we can follow the Lord all the way. But there is a prior condition to follow, ‘hear the calling.’

Do you hear God’s calling to follow Christ today?

Prayer

Lord, today, help us hear your call and follow you faithfully. In Christ name, we pray, AMEN.
