Living in love – 2 John 1:4-6
TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: 2 John 1 3 John 1(CEB)
4 I was overjoyed to find some of your children living in the truth, just as we had been commanded by the Father. 5 Now, dear friends, I am requesting that we love each other. It’s not as though I’m writing a new command to you, but it’s one we have had from the beginning. 6 This is love: that we live according to his commands. This is the command that you heard from the beginning: live in love.
What does this passage mean to me/us
We are called to live in love. What does that mean?
To love others? Yes, that is the command. Jesus clearly commanded us to love our neighbors, as ourselves.
However, where does that love come from? Is our act of love, disguised in pitty, or is it a response of the love that we receive from God?
Then the question comes to asking ‘how can we receive that love?’
John shares how we should ‘live in love.’ He says, “This is love: that we live according to his commands. This is the command that you heard from the beginning: live in love” (v. 6).
Following God’s command is our way to love God, and in that relationship, we receive God’s love. Eventually, we are able to share the love that we receive from our Lord.
Then it means that if we want to love others and live in that love, we need to love our Lord first.
Prayer
Lord, help us to love you in all that we do today. In Christ name, we pray, AMEN.
