Today's Scripture

Learning Heart – Acts 18: 24-28

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Acts 18:19-19:41 (CEB)

24 Now there came to Ephesus a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria. He was an eloquent man, well-versed in the scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord; and he spoke with burning enthusiasm and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the Way of God to him more accurately. 27 And when he wished to cross over to Achaia, the believers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. On his arrival he greatly helped those who through grace had become believers, 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the scriptures that the Messiah is Jesus.

What does this passage mean to me/us

When it comes to Apollos 1 Corinthians comes in mind, “When one of you says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you acting just like people of the world?” (1 Cor 3:4).
Without reading this passage, we can easily dismiss him as a person who taught differently from Paul.

He was a Jew, he was eloquent, and rooted in the Scripture.
He knew and taught about Jesus, and was enthusiastic and bold.

What I learned today, is how teachable he was. When “Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the Way of God to him more accurately” (v. 27) he listened to their teaching.

Is it because Priscilla and Aquila was well known, or was it because of his learning heart?

It seems to be difficult to continue to have a learning heart.
When you are young, it is easier, but once you are established it seems like that heart can diminish.

Do I still have a learning heart for God and from others?

Prayer

Lord, create in us a learning heart to faithfully follow your ways. In Christ name, we pray, AMEN.
