Today's Scripture

Change your hearts: Joel 2:12-17

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Joel 1-3 (CEB)

12 Yet even now, says the Lord,
    return to me with all your hearts,
        with fasting, with weeping, and with sorrow;
13 tear your hearts
        and not your clothing.
    Return to the Lord your God,
        for he is merciful and compassionate,
        very patient, full of faithful love,
            and ready to forgive.
14 Who knows whether he will have a change of heart
    and leave a blessing behind him,
    a grain offering and a drink offering
            for the Lord your God?
15 Blow the horn in Zion;
        demand a fast;
        request a special assembly.
16 Gather the people;
        prepare a holy meeting;
        assemble the elders;
        gather the children,
            even nursing infants.
Let the groom leave his room
        and the bride her chamber.
17 Between the porch and the altar
        let the priests, the Lord’s ministers, weep.
    Let them say, “Have mercy, Lord, on your people,
        and don’t make your inheritance a disgrace,
        an example of failure among the nations.
    Why should they say among the peoples,
        ‘Where is their God?’”

What does this passage mean to me/us

God calls for God’s people to ‘return to me with all your hearts, with fasting, with weeping, and with sorrow;” (v. 12).
Repentance is not to hold us in guilt but to cleanse our lives from the world that caused us to stray away from holiness.
Repentance is the cleansing of my heart, so I come down from the throne of life and inviting Christ to become my true Lord and Savior.

When we a prepared and cleansed, we see how God pour out God’s Spirit to God’s people.
God says, “After that I will pour out my spirit upon everyone; your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions” (v. 26). Wouldn’t it be amazing to see an entire generation dreaming and following the hope of the Kingdom? That happens when we receive the Spirit.

Jesus told us to receive the Holy Spirit (John 20:22).
Are we prepared to receive the Spirit in our lives today?

Prayer

Lord, we repent of living our lives in our own ways. Help us to receive your Spirit and hold onto the hope of your kingdom.  We pray in Christ name, AMEN.
