Today's Scripture

Covenant – Jeremiah 31:31-34

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Jeremiah 30-31

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will make a new covenant
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.
32 It will not be like the covenant
    I made with their ancestors
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,
because they broke my covenant,
though I was a husband to them,”
declares the Lord.
33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
34 No longer will they teach their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more.”

What does this passage mean to me/us

The new covenant is a gift from the Lord. The people broke the old covenant, and God provides a way for us to still be God’s people.
We see the grace of our Lord, in this prophecy. Grace means that even though we don’t deserve we see how  “[God] will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more” (v. 34). Grace also means, “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people” (v. 33).
Not because we did anything to deserve that grace, but just because that is who God is.

However, we also see how we might know about that grace, but so many times it seems like that grace is yet to be fully inscribed in our hearts. When God promises that we will be God’s people, so often we see ourselves living far from being God’s children.
Lord, put your law and grace in our hearts!

Prayer

Lord, your unending love reminds us why we need to turn to your grace. Thank you for your love, shown through our Lord Jesus. Continue to work in our lives, so we can live out your grace. In Christ name, AMEN.
