Today's Scripture

Turn back to the Lord – Jeremiah 4:1-4

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Jeremiah 4-6

“If you, Israel, will return,
    then return to me,”
declares the Lord.
“If you put your detestable idols out of my sight
    and no longer go astray,
and if in a truthful, just and righteous way
you swear, ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’
then the nations will invoke blessings by him
and in him they will boast.”

This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and to Jerusalem:

“Break up your unplowed ground
and do not sow among thorns.
Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
    circumcise your hearts,
you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
or my wrath will flare up and burn like fire
because of the evil you have done—
burn with no one to quench it.

What does this passage mean to me/us

We are called to live according to God’s will. We are on this journey, learning how to let go of our will and align our lives with God’s will. It means that we need to be intentional because if we aren’t we can easily stray away from this purpose.
There are many factors in the world distracting us to see and focus on God’s will. After all, when the people of God fail to follow God’s ways, Satan’s job is done.
The constant plea from God to God’s people is consistent, “If you, Israel, will return, then return to me” (v. 1).
God is waiting for God’s people to return like the father was waiting for his prodigal son to return.
Also, it shows that when we return, we need to return to God, not to other directions.

But when we return, we will see God’s hope and restoration.
And it should start with me.

Prayer

Lord, ‘break up the unplowed ground’ in our hearts. Sow your seed and grow us into your image. Help us today, as we return our hearts to you. In Christ name, AMEN.
