Give to the Lord – Psalm 29
TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Psalm 25 Psalm 29 Psalm 33 Psalm 36 Psalm 39 (CEB)
You, divine beings! Give to the Lord—
give to the Lord glory and power!
2 Give to the Lord the glory due his name!
Bow down to the Lord in holy splendor!
3 The Lord’s voice is over the waters;
the glorious God thunders;
the Lord is over the mighty waters.
4 The Lord’s voice is strong;
the Lord’s voice is majestic.
5 The Lord’s voice breaks cedar trees—
yes, the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon jump around like a young bull,
makes Sirion jump around like a young wild ox.
7 The Lord’s voice unleashes fiery flames;
8 the Lord’s voice shakes the wilderness—
yes, the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9 The Lord’s voice convulses the oaks,
strips the forests bare,
but in his temple everyone shouts, “Glory!”
10 The Lord sits enthroned over the floodwaters;
the Lord sits enthroned—king forever!
11 Let the Lord give strength to his people!
Let the Lord bless his people with peace!
What does this passage mean to me/us?
You, divine beings! Give to the Lord — give to the Lord glory and power! Give to the Lord the glory due his name! Bow down to the Lord in holy splendor!
It is easy for us to think of what we can receive from the Lord, rather than thinking about what we can offer the Lord.
Yes, God is powerful and almighty and what kind of God will be in need?
But we are to offer God, ‘the glory due to God’s name.’
It starts with giving our hearts to God. It is giving our ways to God.
Ultimately, it is to give our lives to God.
I also wonder if I can really live in giving my whole being to God.
I do see how difficult it might be, and I always question, ‘Am I on the right path?’
However, I see how God is great like the psalmist describes, and how small I am.
And it puts me back to see what God really wants from me.
Prayer
Lord, your name is higher than any other name. May my life glorify your name in every day of my life. In Christ name, AMEN.
