Gideon’s Death – Judges 8: 29-35
Today’s Reading Schedule: Judges 8-9 – Click to read
29 Jerubbaal, Joash’s son, went home to live with his own household. 30 Gideon had seventy sons of his own because he had many wives. 31 His secondary wife who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech. 32 Gideon, Joash’s son, died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
33 Right after Gideon died, the Israelites once again acted unfaithfully by worshipping the Baals, setting up Baal-berith as their god. 34 The people of Israel didn’t remember the Lord their God, who had delivered them from the power of all their enemies on every side. 35 Nor did they act loyally toward the household of Jerubbaal, that is, Gideon, in return for all the good that he had done on Israel’s behalf.

What Does the passage Mean to Me/US?
I’m back!
I wanted to start by thanking all our contributors, who lead the devotions with excellence during the Lent!
We were blessed with the word of God shared and your partnership!
I would also like to apologize for not getting this sent out on time, due to it being the day after Easter.

Gideon was a mighty warrior for God. We see from, yesterday’s scripture, how God called him and used him to rescue God’s people from the oppression of the Midianites. Even though we see how Gideon was used and led by the hand of God, we also see what happens when his ways precede God’s ways.
He became in power and went against God’s ways. He made a priestly vest in his hometown and eventually moved back.
He had many wives and many sons, who later the Israelites became against.
And when he lived in that way, the Israelites also did what they saw right in their own eyes.
Even among the people who God uses, there are times they might forget to keep their ways aligned with God’s ways.
When the people who were chosen forgets, it is easy for the world to forget.
That puts upon a heavy responsibility to the people of God. We are not to blame how the world is changing, but rather see how we might have changed. Like we need to have our tires checked for alignment, we also need to check our alignment with God’s will.
Prayer
Lord, we commit to follow your ways. But so many time, we see how we can lose our focus. We ask you to enlighten us, to see how we need to get back on track. Knowing that we cannot do it alone, we ask for your spirit to be with us today. In Christ name, AMEN.
