Keeping God’s Covenant – Deuteronomy 29:2-9
Today’s Reading Schedule: Deuteronomy 28-29- Click to read
“Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that the Lord did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land. With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those signs and great wonders. But to this day the Lord has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear. Yet the Lord says, “During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet. You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink. I did this so that you might know that I am the Lord your God.” When you reached this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to fight against us, but we defeated them. We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh. Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do.”

What Does the passage Mean to Me/US?
Deuteronomy 28 is a lengthy chapter which states specifically how God will bless the Israelites if they fully obey the Lord their God and carefully follow all of his commands. This chapter also includes the curses that will come upon the people if they disobey God’s commands. There is no question that the only way to receive God’s blessing is to remain steadfastly obedient to Him and Him alone. In the 29th chapter of Deuteronomy, Moses summoned all the Israelites to gather together in Moab to renew their covenant with the Lord that was originally made at Horeb. Moses reminded the people that God had taken care of all of their needs during the past forty years, every single physical need. They wore clothes that did nor wear out and they had manna and water provided daily. God was always faithful to His people. He also gave the Israelites victory in battle. This was God’s gracious plan for His chosen people.
Moses told the people that they should carefully follow the terms of the covenant so that they could prosper in everything they did.
The covenant between God and the Israelites was an agreement in which God promised to protect them if they kept His law and were faithful to Him. And God desires the same of us today…to have a relationship with us, to guide us and to bless us. To lead us down the right path of good living and of love. But we need to be faithful to God alone and not to any other person or thing of this world. We must be obedient to His righteous ways and love Him with our whole heart, mind, soul and strength.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, we want to remain true to you as we live our lives each day. Thank you for teaching us that if we have a close relationship with You and we have faith in Your Son, Jesus, that we will be blessed every day of our lives. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen
