Today's Scripture

Fire From the Lord – Numbers 11:4-6, 18-20

Today’s Reading Schedule: numbers 11-13 (CEB)- Click to read

The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, “If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!”

18 “Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The Lord heard you when you wailed, “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!” Now the Lord will give you meat, and you will eat it. 19 You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it—because you have rejected the Lord, who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’

What Does the passage Mean to Me/US?

God uses this situation to teach the Israelites and us that we are to put our trust in him. God has a plan for our life and we should be diligent in our faith that God is in control and he will work out whatever we are going through for the best. The Israelites prayed for deliverance from Egypt and now that God has answered that prayer, there are some not happy with the way it was answered. Some are so unhappy they wish their prayers had not been answered and that they were back in captivity in Egypt.

The scripture calls the complainers “the Rabble “among them. As I study this scripture I am wondering what God was most upset with. People not thankful for his delivering them from captivity or the instigating complainers, the rabble rousers, trying to undermine God’s Plan. Just as it did in this scripture trying to evoke our plan, being selfish and self-centered will only cause pain and suffering. It only serves to move us further away from God and his plan.

Prayer

Heavenly Father we pray that as we encounter difficulties in our life that we put our trust in your love and mercy to see us through. We pray that we put your desires ahead of ours. Your will Lord not thine. In Jesus Christ. Amen.
