Carolyn Waid Redden
August 6th, 1947 – November 29th, 2018
Carolyn Waid Overstreet Redden of Roanoke, VA, widow of the late Lawrence “Larry” Glyndon Redden, passed away November 29, 2018 after a sudden diagnosis of cancer.
She was the daughter of the late Elton Noah Overstreet and Virginia Roberta Waid of Vinton, VA.
Carolyn is survived by her three children, Jody D. Smith, Julie Smith Buchikos, Jeremy D. Smith, and their father, E. Stephen “Steve” Smith. She has four grandchildren, Timothy Noah Buchikos, Noah Justus Smith, Virginia Gray Smith, and Charles Thomas John Smith. She is greatly missed by her cat Roscoe, who has loved her lap and attention for thirteen years.
Carolyn’s whole life was caring for and worrying over her children and grandchildren. She loved the outdoors and tending to her flowers and vegetables. She greatly enjoyed music, often singing and dancing with her children and grandchildren. Carolyn also played in the handbell choirs of Raleigh Court and Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Churches. Her all-time favorite band was the Rolling Stones, who she saw in concert three times with her family. She was in awe of “The Mick” and how he continued to dance and sing at his age.
The family would like to give many thanks to the wonderful staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital who cared for her during her last three weeks including Murphy the therapy dog and his caregivers who visited her often and to her church family and friends from Raleigh Court UMC.
Visitation will be held at Oakey’s North Chapel on Peter’s Creek Road, Roanoke on Sunday, December 2 from 2 – 4 PM and 6 – 8 PM.
Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Raleigh Court UMC with Reverend Seungsoo Jun officiating. A graveside service will follow at Evergreen Burial Park where Carolyn and her late husband Larry Redden will be laid to rest together. A meal and fellowship will follow at Raleigh Court UMC.
Carolyn loved flowers but greater still she was an advocate for and lover of animals. Her family asks that in lieu of flowers, financial gifts or supplies be donated to Roanoke’s Angels of Assisi located at 415 Campbell Ave. SW, Roanoke, VA 24016.
