Today's Scripture

It’s Official – Romans 8:10-17

10 But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

12 So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

What Does the Passage say?
Vs 10-11 “It stands to reason, doesn’t it that if the alive and present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life, he’ll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are delivered from that dead life. With his spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christ’s! – The Message

Vs. 12-14 The Holy Spirit allows us to defeat the wants of the flesh. Paul says to bury our sinful life and move on. Don’t regret being rid of the sin by missing your old life. Don’t let its calling block you from the things God wants to do with you. “ God’s spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go.” – The Message

Vs.15-17 ”This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “what’s next Papa?” God’s spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us- an unbelievable inheritance! We go through exactly what Christ goes through. If we go through the hard times with him, then we’re certainly going to go through the good times with him!” – The Message

What Does it Mean to Me/ Us
Paul wants us to know we can have a different relationship with God. Where God is not the feared task master, but a loving, gentle father whom we respect and follow, not because we fear him but because we are so loved by him. God is our Father. Abba as it translates is a more affectionate term than Father. It is more like we use papa or daddy. It is used to show a more intimate and personal connection. Paul wants us to see our relationship with God and his son Jesus as a family that adopts us. Under this adoption by our claiming Christ as our savior, we have full rights to our father’s inheritance just as Jesus had. The holy spirit that dwells in us allows us to die to our sinful life. This opens a new life of opportunities here on earth and a promise of God breathing the same life in us at death as he did his son Jesus. Our full inheritance is a resurrected life in heaven with God our father and his son Jesus.

There is a price for being identified with Jesus. Along with the great treasures, Paul mentions the suffering that Christians must face. To live as Christ wants us to live – serving others, giving up one’s own rights, resisting pressures to conform to the word – always exacts a price. Nothing we suffer however, can compare to the great price Jesus paid to save us.- The Life Application Bible

Prayer

Heavenly Father we pray for the power of the holy spirit to direct our decisions and our actions that allow us to live the life God has in store for us. To have the full bounty of his inheritance. In Christ’s name we pray- Amen
