Today's Scripture

Eternal Light – John 1:1-18

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified to him and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’”) 16 From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.

What the passage says

V. 1-5 The Word was with God at the beginning of the creation. The Word represented life and light to darkness.

V. 6-13  John the Baptist was called to prepare the way of the Word. John the Baptist was to help people realize they were stuck in darkness.

V. 14-18 The Word became flesh and made himself valuable to the people. Where the light appeared darkness disappeared.

What does the passage say to me/us?

As we know, darkness does not exist. Instead, darkness is an absent of light.
Jesus came to this world to shine the light to the dark world. And when he died and resurrected from the dead, he won the darkness.
Then you should ask, ‘Why do we still see darkness in this world?’
The time of God and the time of the world is a bit different. Jesus triumphed the war between darkness, but it is still for us to carry the light of Jesus to the world.
Like John the Baptist, we are not the light, but we are the bearers of light. As the world saw God through Jesus Christ, as we bear Jesus in this world, the world will see our Lord.
What would we need to do to bear the light of Jesus?
Where should we go and shine the light of Jesus?
Pray that you ponder on this question today.

Prayer

Lord, we are thankful for your love to come and shine in our lives. We are thankful that you still bring the light when it seems like we are caught in darkness. As we see the hope of Jesus, let us also go to the world and share that love with others in the darkness.
In Christ name, we pray, AMEN
