Scripture: Mark 1:14-28 (CEB)

14 After John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee announcing God’s good news, 15 saying, “Now is the time! Here comes God’s kingdom! Change your hearts and lives, and trust this good news!”

16 As Jesus passed alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” 18 Right away, they left their nets and followed him. 19 After going a little farther, he saw James and John, Zebedee’s sons, in their boat repairing the fishing nets. 20 At that very moment he called them. They followed him, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers.

21 Jesus and his followers went into Capernaum. Immediately on the Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and started teaching. 22 The people were amazed by his teaching, for he was teaching them with authority, not like the legal experts. 23 Suddenly, there in the synagogue, a person with an evil spirit screamed, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are the holy one from God.”

25 “Silence!” Jesus said, speaking harshly to the demon. “Come out of him!” 26 The unclean spirit shook him and screamed, then it came out.

27 Everyone was shaken and questioned among themselves, “What’s this? A new teaching with authority! He even commands unclean spirits and they obey him!” 28 Right away the news about him spread throughout the entire region of Galilee.

What does this passage mean to me/us?

The Bible is full of mystery and all sorts of emotions that intrigue and instruct us in living like Jesus. In the first of these three scriptures we find Joseph’s brothers plotting to do away with him, as they believe he may receive a special inheritance from Jacob. They plotted to end his life. The oldest brother, Reuben, heard that still small voice in his heart, the voice The Dreamer had spoken of, the voice that told Reuben not to murder him. The same voice that speaks to you as you read this and think, bless his heart. For you see, Joseph’s brothers thought they had a good plan but really, they were just pieces of lent on the pages of Gods major plan.

In Paul’s letter to the Corinthians he tells us,” If you’re going to blow a horn blow a trumpet for Jesus.” If I were to paraphrase this, I would have said trombone! The text tells us the high minded well thought of among us are not always prominent to Gods plan. He often uses the less thought of in this world. You see God knows us better than we know ourselves. God is there with us when we think we are all alone. Isn’t it wonderful God Loves us all in ways we can’t begin to imagine?

The passage in Mark clearly leads us to the Passion of Christ with His teaching. The beginning of Jesus Ministry. What a World changing event. We have a Loving Father in Heaven who loves us and wants his children to be with him for Eternity. He sent His Son to teach and help us where we need it the most. So, lets open our hearts to The Lord Jesus.
