Jean Garst Hughes Martin of Roanoke died on Thursday January 21, 2016 at the Joseph C. Thomas Center at Richfield Living in Salem, VA. She was the wife of the late Gilmer Edward Martin, the daughter of Lillian Katherine Garst Hughes and Claude Fitzpatrick Hughes, Sr., the granddaughter of Sue Elizabeth Peters Garst, Jacob Benjamin Garst, Leola Susan Drummond Hughes and Marcellus Bell Hughes, all deceased. She was pre-deceased by her first husband Ernest M. Johnson, their son, Eric Bryan Johnson, and a brother, Dr. Russell Lee Hughes. She is survived by a sister, Martha Sue Hughes (Neil) Wimmer of Burlington, NC, a brother, Claude Fitzpatrick (Jean) Hughes, Jr. of Hilton Head, SC, step-daughters Cynthia M. Bryan of Roanoke, Michelle M. Creasy of Vinton, Karen M. (Edwin) Wright of Richmond, and brothers-in-law Winfred (Doris) Martin and William (Lois) Martin of Claudville, VA.

Jean was a graduate of Roanoke College, where she received a B.A. Degree in French and a minor in Education. She taught school for a few years but her main enjoyment was all types of dance, especially ballroom. She directed the ballroom dance department at the Floyd Ward School of Dance. She served on the Board of Directors for the YWCA of Roanoke Valley and was actively involved at the Roanoke Museum of Fine Arts where she served as a docent. Jean enjoyed her Roanoke friends, the “Girlies”, the Coughdrop group, and fellow residents of Sea Colony in Palm Coast, FL. She was a longtime member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church in Roanoke.

The family would like to thank the staff (especially Katie Jones and Martha Altizer) of the Joseph C. Thomas Center, the CNA’s from Interim HealthCare, the personnel from Good Samaritan Hospice, and Drs. Syed Haider and Fuller Robinson for their compassionate care on Jean’s behalf.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, January 29, 2016 at Oakey’s South Chapel, with Rev. Roy L. Miller of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends before the funeral services from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM. Memorials may be made to Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, 1706 Grandin Rd. SW, Roanoke VA 24015; Good Samaritan Hospice, 2408 Electric Rd. Roanoke, VA 24018 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
