Today's Scripture

Ezekiel 28:1-10
Today’s reading Ezekiel 28-30

The word of the Lord came to me: Mortal, say to the prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:

Because your heart is proud
    and you have said, “I am a god;
I sit in the seat of the gods,
    in the heart of the seas,”
yet you are but a mortal, and no god,
    though you compare your mind
    with the mind of a god.
You are indeed wiser than Daniel;[a]
    no secret is hidden from you;
by your wisdom and your understanding
    you have amassed wealth for yourself,
and have gathered gold and silver
    into your treasuries.
By your great wisdom in trade
    you have increased your wealth,
    and your heart has become proud in your wealth.
Therefore thus says the Lord God:
Because you compare your mind
    with the mind of a god,
therefore, I will bring strangers against you,
    the most terrible of the nations;
they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom
    and defile your splendor.
They shall thrust you down to the Pit,
    and you shall die a violent death
    in the heart of the seas.
Will you still say, “I am a god,”
    in the presence of those who kill you,
though you are but a mortal, and no god,
    in the hands of those who wound you?
10 You shall die the death of the uncircumcised
    by the hand of foreigners;
    for I have spoken, says the Lord God.

What does the passage say?
V. 1-2 God’s prophecy to the prince of Tyre. God rebukes him for considering him, as god.
V. 3-5 The prince of Tyre was certainly a person with wisdom. With that wisdom, he accumulated much wealth.
V. 6-8 God is sending forces to tear down the pride of the prince.
V. 9-10 You are mortal, and God is the Lord

What does this passage mean to me/us?

We are reading through the Book of Ezekiel, according to the One Year Bible reading challenge.

Pride is dangerous, especially in our relationship with God.
Once we consider what we have is what I have earned or deserve, and forget the purpose that what we have is to be shared with others, we can fall into a trap of being prideful.
The reason why pride is dangerous is that we slowly put ourselves in the role of God.
What we have is considered our, instead of a gift from God.
We focus on ourselves, instead of focusing on God’s purpose.
When we come to that point, consciously or unconsciously, we can be putting ourselves in God’s seat in our heart.
Receiving Christ, as our Lord and savior, is to honor God in the throne of our life.
As we live in the world, we might want to creep up on that throne, but the Bible shows us that can be dangerous.

“The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.” Proverbs 16:5

Prayer

Lord, humble our hearts to be humble. Tear down all of our pride. Be the Lord of our lives.  In Christ Name, AMEN.
