Today's Scripture

Clothed In The Spirit Acts 2:1-12

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

What Does the Passage Say?

V. 1-4 On the day of Pentecost, which was a traditional holiday of the Jews, the Spirit descended to heaven as dividing tounges. All who were gathered were filled with the Holy Spirit.
V. 5-12 They were speaking and different languages and the Jews, who were gathered for the Pentecost festival were bewildered to hear how they were hearing about “God’s deed and power” in their native tounges.

What Does the passage Mean to Me/Us?

“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.”

The amazing event of Pentecost, the Spirit descending on the disciples, happened when ‘they were all together in one place.’
What were they doing in one place? In the previous chapter, where Jesus ascended into heaven, he says, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). After they saw Jesus going up to heaven, they have gathered in Mark’s upper room and ” were constantly devoting themselves to prayer” (Acts 1:14)

The ones who held on to Jesus’ promise gathered in one place.
The ones who opened to receive the power of the Holy Spirit gathered in one place.
And that should be the reason we gather in one place.

Prayer

Lord, we gather in one place to become your witnesses. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon our gathering and use us for your glory. In Christ Name, we pray, AMEN.
