Today's Scripture

Stepping Over 1 Timothy 6:17-19

17 As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, 19 thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.

What Does the Passage Say?

V. 17 – the word ‘haughty’ comes from a Greek word ‘ὑψηλοφρονέω’ (hupsélophroneó), which means to be high-minded, arrogant, or prideful.
V. 18-19 the rich is to focus their attention on God, who is the source of richness in life, and use their riches for God’s glory.

What Does the passage Mean to Me/Us?

When it comes to being rich, we have a tendency to look to the ones who seem to have more than us, rather the other way around. And it is for us to be accountable to each other, not be focus our eyes onto the material, but see why God is allowing us or even not allowing us to have the riches of the world.
Are the riches of the world distracting us to see and commit to God fully?
Are the worries of not having enough block us to see where others don’t have enough?
Are we using our riches for the fullness of life?

Prayer

Lord, we are here, starting another day, which seems to work for the riches. However, in our work or abundance, help us not to lose focus on you, who is the source of true riches. In Christ Name, we pray, AMEN.
