Today's Scripture

Psalm 92:1-15

Thanksgiving for Vindication

A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath Day.

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
    to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
    and your faithfulness by night,
to the music of the lute and the harp,
    to the melody of the lyre.
For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work;
    at the works of your hands I sing for joy.

How great are your works, O Lord!
    Your thoughts are very deep!
The dullard cannot know,
    the stupid cannot understand this:
though the wicked sprout like grass
    and all evildoers flourish,
they are doomed to destruction forever,
    but you, O Lord, are on high forever.
For your enemies, O Lord,
    for your enemies shall perish;
    all evildoers shall be scattered.

10 But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox;
    you have poured over me[a] fresh oil.
11 My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies;
    my ears have heard the doom of my evil assailants.

12 The righteous flourish like the palm tree,
    and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
13 They are planted in the house of the Lord;
    they flourish in the courts of our God.
14 In old age they still produce fruit;
    they are always green and full of sap,
15 showing that the Lord is upright;
    he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

What Does the Passage Say?

Verse 1-5  It is a good thing to praise the Lord each Sabbath day together and to be joyful in recognizing God’s continuing handiwork of Creation!

Verses 6-11  Unfortunately, there remains those who fail or refuse to recognize God.  Even those who seem to be benefiting from God’s graciousness on their lives, not understanding their days will end in destruction.

Verses 12-15  But those who lives and inner spirits planted in God’s kingdom will continue to be renewed and refreshed, even to the end of their days.

What Does the passage Mean to Me/Us?

The superscription for this psalm is “A Song for the Sabbath Day”.

We were not created to live alone and separated from one another, but to be in community.  To lift praises, songs, prayers and the Holy Word together.  To affirm a community that recognizes and praises God as our creator and sustainer, our Rock.  !  God’s word to us is that this path leads to “good fruit” and continual renewal to carry us toward God’s kingdom.

Yet there are many other voices surrounding our community at RCUMC, that seek to distract, separate and divide us.  These voices attempt steal our hearts and take our eyes away from the Lord.  Some of these voices hold up the way of their apparent “success” in an effort to dissuade us, not understanding that in doing so they become enemies of God.  In the end, their path only leads to separation and alienation.

Recently Stephanie and I were visiting our daughter and her family in Los Angeles, an immense, restless city.  While there, what a joy on Sunday morning to connect online with our RCUMC community in worship across time and space!  And from there to go to worship with a daughter at their church and be physically in the presence of another vibrant faith community praising God.  What a blessing that God calls us to receive the saving grace of Jesus and be refreshed and renewed week by week for all of our days!!

Prayer

Lord,You are my Rock, renewing and sustaining my life.  You bless me with community to strengthen and enrich my life. By your Holy Spirit working in me, may my worship and praise of You be acceptable in your sight.  Strengthen me to avoid all the distracting voices around that seek to separate me from You and from my brothers and sisters.  Lead me daily that my life yields good fruit, borne of Your will and Your love.  Amen
