Today's Scripture

Question #20 – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
-Is there anyone whom I fear, dislike, disown, criticize, hold a resentment toward or disregard? If so, what am I doing about it?

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end.

RJ's Devotion

As we start 2017, we wanted to examine the 22 questions of John Wesley. He challenged his followers to ask these rigorous self-examining questions, as they walk toward holiness. For the next four weeks, we will examine each question, daily. Also, I encourage you to read the ‘One Year Bible Reading Plan’ suggested by Bishop Sharma Lewis.

What the passage says

V. 4-7 Paul shares the true meaning of Love. Imagine if we can all live in this manner of love.

V. 8 Compared to other spiritual gifts, and in our case any secular values, love endures forever.

What does the passage say to me/us?

“Is there anyone whom I fear, dislike, disown, criticize, hold a resentment toward or disregard? If so, what am I doing about it?”

We claim that we love others. I learn, however, that many times I have a tendency to love the ones who are ‘likable.’ On top of that, when they become ‘less likable’ we think that we have a choice to distance ourselves away from them. By isolating ourselves to experience the love that endures, we continue to seek for love, but never experience the true meaning of love. However, God wants us to face our issues. God wants us to endure in love. Ultimately, God wants us to experience and share that love with the world. Who is ‘less likable’ in your life? What are you going to do?

Prayer

Lord, pour out your love on us. Help us to live in your love. Help us to share it with others. In Christ name, we pray, AMEN
