Reflection – 1 John 1-11

We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us— we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our[a] joy may be complete.

God Is Light

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

The promise of eternal life is living in fellowship with God. Eternal life is to be part of that fellowship for eternity.

This morning, I heard the news of one of our loving member pass away. It is a terrible news for the family and friends, who loved her dearly, but we can rejoice and celebrate her life since we believe that she is in God’s hand for eternity.

For us to live in eternity with God, we need to remember two things.

First, we need to remember that our sins are washed away as we confess our sins.

Today’s passage says, “If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1: 9

It sounds simple, but we a heart of repentance, our sins are considered wash white as snow so that we are included in the presence of God. This shows how much God loves us.

But more importantly, our lives have to reflect that great act of God’s love. We need to live as a person, who has the promise of eternal life.

It says, “If we claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we’re obviously lying through our teeth-we’re not living what we claim.” 1 John 1:6 The Message

We need to live the life as we claim to be the children of God.

Today is the last day of 2015. May we take a time to reflect on how we lived the past year. Did we live worthy of God’s forgiveness and call to live in this world as children of God? May the grace of God continue to overflow in our live, so that in 2016, we will be able to live in the light, worthy of our call.
