Today's Scripture

They Will Be Done Luke 22:39-46

39 He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. 40 When he reached the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not come into the time of trial.” 41 Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done.” [[43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. 44 In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.]] 45 When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial.”

 WHAT DOES THE PASSAGE say?

V. 39-40 Jesus went up to Mt. Olive, as his usual practice, and asked his disciples to pray with him.
V. 41-44 He needed the power of prayer to carry out the task given to him. However, the cross was to heavy to bear, in prayer, his sweat turned into blood.
V. 45-46 He comes back and saw how his disciples were sleeping. He warns them to be awake in prayer, not to fall into temptation.

What Does the passage Mean to Me/US?

Last week, my wife asked me to set up a time so we can pray side-by-side.
It was a wake-up call from Jesus saying, ““What business do you have sleeping? Get up. Pray, so you won’t give in to temptation” (v. 46 The Message).
When Jesus went up to the mountain to pray, would he have really needed to the prayer of the disciples? Yes, as a perfect human, he would have needed their accountability. However, as a perfect God, he must have wanted to teach us a lesson about accountability.
We need each other to wake us up from the slumber.
We need each other to pray and be awake not to fall into temptation. Because, when the people of God are a sleep, the world can’t see the light of Jesus shining through them.

Prayer

Lord, keep us accountable to each other, so we can shine your light today. In Christ Name, we pray, AMEN
