Today's Scripture

Learning to Trust Proverbs 3:1-6

My child, do not forget my teaching,
    but let your heart keep my commandments;
for length of days and years of life
    and abundant welfare they will give you.

Do not let loyalty and faithfulness forsake you;
    bind them around your neck,
    write them on the tablet of your heart.
So you will find favor and good repute
    in the sight of God and of people.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not rely on your own insight.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.

What the passage says

V. 1-2 Keep the law and it will bring ‘peace and prosperity.’
V. 3-4 Love God and make sure you don’t forget it.
V. 5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your understanding and see how the Lord works in your life.

What does the passage mean to me/us?

This Proverbs reminds me of the Shema. Shema is the command of God to the people of God. To remember that God is one, and the call to Love God.
As a matter of fact, this Sunday’s sermon is based on the Shema from Deuteronomy 6:4-9. God commands the Israelites to “And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might” (Deuteronomy 6:5). God adds to this command by saying that we need to teach this command, but also tie it around our hand and forehead.
That is the reason why I am reminded of the Shema through this passage.

The Proverbs does not say that we need to love God, but says, “Do not lose your grip on Love and Loyalty” (V. 3 The Message).
Even though it does not specify, who we need to love, we can assume that our love should be focused on God.
However, the reason why both God and the Proverbs tells us to “bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart” (v. 3 NRSV), is because of the human nature.
We forget to love God with all that he have. We tend to love other things in the world, in the place of God. And when we live in that manner, we are lost.

That is why we need to commit our lives to the Greatest Commandment; ‘Love God and Love others.’

When we live in Love and trust, we will be able to fulfill our purpose.

Prayer

Lord, help us to love you more. And as a product of that love, help us to love others today.

In Christ Name, we pray, AMEN
